Positano styling guide
What to wear for your Positano photo shoot
The best outfit is not the most formal or expensive one. It is the outfit that moves well, feels like you and works with Positano's blue water, sunlit stone and colourful architecture. These practical choices will help your photographs feel elegant without looking overly arranged.
Choose colours that belong to the coast
White, ivory, soft blue, sage, coral, dusty rose and warm neutral tones photograph beautifully against the Amalfi Coast. Richer colours such as red, emerald or deep blue can also work when used as a deliberate accent.
Positano already contains many colours. You do not need to compete with every building. A controlled palette keeps attention on faces and emotion while allowing the landscape to remain vivid.
Prioritise fabric, movement and comfort
Linen, cotton, silk blends and softly structured dresses move naturally in the sea breeze. A skirt or dress with some movement adds energy to walking photographs, while a well-fitted shirt or lightweight jacket creates clean lines without feeling too formal.
If an outfit constantly needs adjusting, it will distract you from the experience. Sit, walk and raise your arms while trying it on. You should be able to move comfortably before the camera appears.
For couples: coordinate, do not match
Choose two outfits that feel as though they belong in the same story. One person can wear a solid neutral while the other introduces a soft pattern or stronger colour. Repeating one small tone, such as blue in a shirt and a floral dress, creates harmony without looking identical.
Avoid both people wearing competing patterns. The connection between you should be the strongest element in the photograph.
For families: build one shared palette
Start with two or three colours and distribute them across the family. Cream, blue and a warm accent are reliable choices for the coast. Different textures keep the group interesting while the limited palette makes the final portraits feel composed.
Children should wear clothes they can move in. A perfect outfit is not useful if a child feels uncomfortable after ten minutes. Bring a small backup item for very young children and avoid shoes that are difficult on steps.
Bring the right shoes for Positano
Positano includes stairs, slopes and stone paving. Elegant shoes can be worn for selected photographs, but comfortable walking shoes should be carried between locations. Thin heels are rarely practical on the route.
Clean sandals, loafers, simple trainers or low block heels usually work well. Barefoot photographs can be beautiful on the beach when conditions allow.
What is better left at the hotel
Large brand logos, neon sportswear, very fine stripes and busy prints can distract or create visual interference on camera. Empty pockets before the session so phones, wallets and hotel keys do not change the shape of clothing.
Sunglasses are useful between photographs, but most portraits are stronger when the eyes are visible. Bring them if they are part of your style, then use them selectively.

Frequently asked questions
Useful details before you make plans.
Should I wear white for a Positano photo shoot?
White and ivory work beautifully against the sea and colourful buildings, but they are not compulsory. Soft blues, warm neutrals and carefully chosen stronger colours are equally effective.
Can I change outfits during the session?
A quick change may be possible during a longer session, but changing rooms are limited. For a one-hour photo shoot, one versatile outfit usually produces a more relaxed experience.
What should I wear for a surprise proposal?
Choose an outfit that feels special but believable for the cover story you have planned. Coordinate subtly with your partner and make sure the ring box can be carried without being visible.
